What is Red Pocket Gifts?

Red Pocket Gifts was launched as a FREE service to anyone who wants to send a virtual 'red pocket' for special occasions to friends and family (see link Tradition of the Red Pocket). This service is combined with the ability to make the gift giving experience personal, by adding a special message and a video to the recipient.

Is using Red Pocket Gifts to transfer money safe for me and the person I’m sending money to?

Sending a Red Pocket is facilitated using PayPal money transfer services. We at Red Pocket Gifts Ltd. will never receive, handle, process or manage in any way, the funds that you send to your friends and/or family members. All gift amounts and any PayPal fees, if any, will be handled strictly via PayPal. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the safety and security of using PayPal, please visit the Help section of PayPal’s website.

Can anyone send a virtual Red Pocket on your website?

No. You need a PayPal account in order to send a gift using our website. To open a Personal account, you just need to provide your name, address, phone number, and email address. After you sign up for an account, you can start receiving money right away. You’ll need to add a payment method (like a credit card or bank account) to send money. But don’t worry, opening an account is easy and it’s FREE. Don’t have a PayPal account? Just click on this link to Get Started.

What if the person I’m sending a Red Pocket to doesn’t have a PayPal account?

You can still send money to someone if they don’t have a PayPal account. They will receive an e-mail notifying them of the payment, and just need to open a PayPal account to get their money. Joining is free so it will not cost them anything to set up.

I would like to send a gift to a child, who is under age and cannot open a PayPal account. What do I do?

You’re correct. Children are of minority age and will not be able to open a PayPal account. In order to send them a gift, you will have to send it to their Parent or Guardian who will receive it on their behalf.

What if I’m the sender and I do not have a PayPal account?

You will need to have a PayPal account to send a Red Pocket. Joining is easy and FREE. Just click on this link to Get Started.

What if I send someone money but I use the wrong e-mail address?

Don’t worry. If you send money to an e-mail address that is not registered with PayPal, the person will receive an e-mail to tell them that funds have been sent to that particular e-mail. If they are already registered with PayPal using a different e-mail address, they can simply add their other address to their account and receive their funds. If they do not have a PayPal account, then they can easily set one up for free.

Do I need to register to the Red Pocket Gifts website if I receive a Red Pocket Gift?

No. If you are lucky enough to receive a Red Pocket Gift from your friend or family member, you can click the link provided and it will take you directly to the website where you can view your gift. All gifts will be kept on our server for one month before they are deleted.

How much money can I send or receive using Red Pocket Gifts?

There are restrictions as to how much FREE money you can send or receive using our website. The current limit is set at $1,000 per user per month, and there are no transaction costs associated with sending within these limits (unless you are making a cross bordertransaction with currency exchange – where standard PayPal fees apply). Hopefully this will allow you more than enough of gift giving and receiving amounts. However, if the occasion for the gifts is extra special, and you expect to send or receive more than this limit, you will still be able to do this, but PayPal will class these as a ‘service’ transaction and normal Merchant PayPal fees will apply. Depending on the country of the RECIPIENT, this would be:

U.S.
2.9% + $0.30 per transaction*

Canada
2.9% = $0.30 (or less) per transaction*

UK
3.4% + 20p per transaction*

*correct as of Nov 2015, plus applicable cross border/currency conversion fees, if any. Fees stated are assuming that the sender is funding the PayPal transaction from their bank account rather than their Debit or Credit Card. For all applicable fees, you will have to see PayPal’s fees for Service transactions (Merchant). Please note that if your gift totals are less than $1,000 for Sending and Receiving, then these Service transaction fees DO NOT apply. Also, Red Pocket Gifts never charge you for your transactions and the service is free to use from us.

Why should I use Red Pocket Gifts? I can send money directly via PayPal, bank transfer, or many other methods of sending money, whether in country, or abroad?

Yes, you have many options to send money gifts to anyone and anywhere. However, using Red Pocket Gifts makes this a personal and unique experience to both the Sender and the Receiver. Currently, there are no websites that can offer this unique service to you, and at no charge. Even if you were to do a bank transfer overseas, the fees associated for both the sender and receiver would likely be even more than the PayPal fees using this website. If you wrote a cheque in your local currency, the recipient would need to cash this at their bank, and again pay the fees associated with the currency conversion. But the most important benefit of using Red Pocket Gifts is that the tradition of money gift giving is revived, but with a modern twist. It is special and personal – and this in itself is what makes each moment priceless.

Why is the Country I’m trying to select not listed in the Drop Down?

You may find that the Country of your intended recipient is not listed. This may be due to the fact that we have deliberately not included it. Under PayPal’s rules, certain countries are not eligible for using the Red Pocket Gift service (there’s a whole lot of banking legislation behind all of this!). Currently, the restricted countries are India, Singapore, Taiwan and Malaysia. If, however, you are looking for a country that isn’t one of the restricted countries, we may have missed it! Please send us a message at info@redpocketgifts.com and we will fix the problem as quickly as we possibly can! In the meantime, as long as it is not one of the restricted countries, please select Other and proceed with sending your special gift.

Usage Restrictions (Who Can Use)

Are there any other restrictions as to who can send or receive a Red Pocket Gift?

Yes. Unfortunately there are some countries where Red Pocket Gifts will not be accessible to. This is due to current banking legislation surrounding money transfer. At the moment the restricted countries are: Singapore, Taiwan, Malaysia and India.

PayPal Safety and Fees

What fees are charged for sending a Red Pocket?

Sending a Red Pocket is FREE and we do not charge any fees to either the sender or receiver. However, there are a couple of scenarios where you may need to incur standard PayPal charges. Although you can send and receive any gift amounts, this is only free from standard PayPal charges up to $1000 USD per calendar month. If the Sender or Receiver exceeds this amount in the calendar month, or within a single transaction, then standard PayPal transaction charges will apply (i.e., in the U.S., this is 2.9% + $0.30 ~ correct as at Nov.13, 2015). The only other time there is a fee is if it’s a gift being sent to another country or currency, or is being funded by the sender’s PayPal account using a Debit Card or Credit Card. In these cases, normal PayPal fees apply. However, if it’s a gift in the same country or currency and paid with your existing PayPal balance or bank account, then there is no charge. Please visit your country’s PayPal website for up-to-date information on transaction fees.

Why did I just receive a gift but not get the full amount specified?

If you received a gift and the amount you actually received is slightly less than the gift specified, this would be a cross border fee of 1% that was charged to you. As per PayPal's fee charging structure, the Sender never pays the cross border fee, only the transaction fees.

What is a Preapproval and why is PayPal asking me to authorize this?

When you click SEND A GIFT, PayPal will then authorize the transaction as a Preapproval. When the Recipient OPENS their Red Pocket Gifts, the money transfer will then take place. Please note that your Preapproval is valid for 30 days, so if the person you are sending money to does not open their red pocket and 'accept' their payment, then the payment will no longer work and you will have to re-send the gift (but this time make sure they know you have sent it so they can check their e-mail!! :-).

I received a gift and released my funds. Where is the money?

If you have already viewed your gift and have clicked on the link to release your funds, but have checked your PayPal account and the funds are not there, this may be because the sender did not use their PayPal balance to fund the gift and they also do not have a credit card on file with PayPal. This would be considered an 'echeque' so it may take a few days for PayPal to get the money from their bank account to fund the transaction.

Videos and Privacy

If I upload a video, will this be viewable by anyone?

No, all of the videos will be uploaded onto a secure server and cannot be accessed by anyone who doesn’t have the unique link.

Why doesn't my card play properly?

If you're viewing your card from a mobile phone or a tablet, the video portion of your card may not automatically play. This is because we don't want you to be charged any unexpected mobile data charges as video takes up a huge amount of bandwidth. If you choose to view your card over your mobile network (instead of wifi), then you can click play to continue viewing your card and watch the special video that has been sent to you. You may also get unexpected results depending on the type of mobile device you are using to view your card, and the age of the device, operating system etc. But don't worry, if you find that your card cannot be viewed properly, then you can always open it from a desktop computer or a laptop where the viewing experience will be smoother. Hope you enjoy your gift!! :-)

Why do I need to upload a video? Can I send a card and money gift without this?

To make the gift of a virtual red pocket meaningful and personal, you will need to upload a video. If you're camera shy, don't worry, it won't be seen by anyone else except for the receiver of the money gift. Just keep it short and sweet ~ the gift receiving experience will be very special. Alternatively, you can choose the many other ways of sending money to a friend or family member that can include a message. However, Red Pocket Gifts makes this a unique and more personal experience that brings people together when this may not be physically possible.

Troubleshooting

I registered on the website but can't log in.

If you registered with Red Pocket Gifts, you will receive a verification e-mail to the e-mail account that you registered with. If you haven't received this e-mail, chances are it may have gone into your spam folder. You'll need mark this as 'not spam' or add Red Pocket Gifts to your contacts to receive our e-mails in the future.

I sent someone a Red Pocket Gift but I can't see this in my Dashboard as a Sent Transaction.

If you sent a Red Pocket Gift and it's not showing up in your Dashboard, don't worry as this doesn't mean that you've made a payment. The PayPal transaction is a Preapproval which means that this will only be paid when the receiver clicks on their card to receive the funds. So no money leaves your account when the gift is made, only when it is viewed and funds are released by the recipient. So if this gift is not appearing on your Dashboard, you may need to start over as the transaction may not have been completed properly. If the error still persists, feel free to contact us at info@redpocketgifts.com for further assistance.

I sent someone a Red Pocket Gift but they didn't receive it.

If you sent someone a gift and they haven't claimed it, then you may want to check that they received this gift in their e-mail. If they haven't, then they may need to check their spam folder and mark the e-mail as 'not spam' and/or add Red Pocket Gifts to their list of contacts. The PayPal transaction that was made during the gift sending process is a Preapproval, so funds do not leave your account until the recipient view and clicks on the link to receive their funds. Preapprovals are valid for 30 days, so an unclaimed gift will not longer be available after this time.

I received a Red Pocket Gift, but when I finished viewing my card, the message at the end says "This is a preview. Return to Card Design."

If you received a Red Pocket Gift and you see this message, please send us an e-mail at info@redpocketgifts.com. This may happen in a minority of received cards, but rest assured, you will receive your gift :). Red Pocket Gifts is a new service that helps people to re-connect through the tradition of Chinese money gift giving so please bear with us as we try to iron out any bugs.

I received a Red Pocket Gift, but I don't see the funds in my PayPal account.

If you have received a Red Pocket Gift and have claimed it, depending on how the sender funded the gift, it may take a few days to show up in your account. For example, if they funded it from their bank account and not their PayPal balance, then the funds would need to clear from their account before it is sent to you. Also, if the funds are from another country or currency, this may also be the reason of any delays.
